Why is the International Harp Therapy Program Unique?
2. The International Harp Therapy Program endorses a balance between music, medicine and spirituality. 3. Certified Practitioners offer both bedside music (repertoire from many genres) and interactive work with patients. 4. At the core of the program, the practitioner recognizes that each individual has their own Resonant tone, style of musical preference, and their own rhythm. Combining these elements, the practitioner offers the client or patient their own personal musical journey or "their own cradle of sound" to help them in emotional, mental, physical and spiritual healing. What Is Harp Therapy ? For centuries, the beneficial relationship between music and healing has been well established. We now have substantial documentation of the responsiveness to and appreciation of music by peoples of all ages and cultures. Music played on the harp has several unique healing properties. The resonance from the strings, including the range of pitch and tonal color, set up an important relationship between the sound and the recipient. Historically, the harp has been a symbol of relief and comfort Practitioner graduates of the International Harp Therapy Program use the small harp as a bedside instrument with the intention of supporting the recipient's goal of healing. This goal may be emotional, physical, mental or spiritual in nature. The soothing sounds of the harp not only can enhance the quality of life, but create the possibility of interactive work in which the recipient might play the harp. Working with the therapeutic harp is as varied as our clients.
People of all ages and circumstances benefit from the Therapeutic Harp Children in hospital settings, and with other special needs such as developmental disabilities, respond well to the harp. Evidence of a range of healthy outcomes have been recorded. They include appropriate excitement, joy, empowerment, as well as relaxation.
In the Corporate structure, harps have been utilized as part of a stress management program. The results are a "time out" refreshment and centering for employees. Increased concentration and motivation have been reported.
During childbirth, harp music helps to create an atmosphere of love and safety, with the possibility of supporting the rhythm of the mother's breathing.
Interactive work, touching and even learning to play the harp, increases the recipient's physical coordination and concentration. The benefit of a shared activity can also be important.
For people in Intensive Care Units and in Operating Rooms, monitors show that the heart rate decreases and the Oxygenation levels increase when soothing harp music is played. Harp music provides sound or focus other than the humming and beeping of hospital machines.
In Hospices, transitional stages are often an area where harp music can be very supportive. The sounds of the harp comfort and soothe the patient who may be in pain or experiencing fear. The families of these loved ones also benefit from the support of therapeutic harp.
People who suffer from Alzheimer's Disease often access memory through songs from their past.

The Int'l Harp Therapy Program We are excited to announce our new affiliation with an excellent hospital system that nurtures and provides patients with superb care integrating holistic modalities within their medical facilities. At the Planetree Hospital Annual Conferences in San Diego, CA (2006) and Williamsburg, VA (2007), IHTP Leaders met with over 700 hospital administrators and outlined our enhancement packages for their hospitals. As a result, we have new training centers at Planetree Hospitals; student training opportunities where hospitals provide rooming and local transportation while the student is doing their internship in the hospital; graduate employment opportunities; and lastly, teaching DVDs and harps for patients to use through the hospital resource centers. Planetree is another word for the Sycamore Tree, and was the place under which Hippocrates taught medicine and healing to his students. The philosophies of the International Harp Therapy Program and the Planetree Hospital Model are like a marriage made in heaven. (note: If you are already a practitioner currently employed in a Planetree hospital, please contact our office).
Our new Rainbow of Sound programs are offering children in hospitals, camps, and people in rehab and senior centers a whole new exciting opportunity to play music. Our facilitators utilize fun and storylines with visuals to enhance the time spent learning the harp. Learning simple tunes that work as rounds creates a sense of belonging to a group.
